The TEC - Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua is a small Crown agency with a big job to do - ensuring New Zealanders have the skills and the knowledge they need to ensure lifelong success to build a great country. We lead the Government's relationship with the tertiary education sector in New Zealand and provide career services from education to employment.
Our Fund Specialists/ Ngā Mātanga Pūtea team ensures TEC's investments achieve the strategic intent set by the TEC Strategy. This involves the coordination and management of the annual funding and recovery cycles, including in-year adjustments, to enable continuous improvement. The Funds span research, degree-level training, vocational training, and foundational education.
Do you thrive on making financial systems work smarter for the public good? We're looking for a Funding Analyst to join our Ngā Mātanga Pūtea (Fund Specialists) team. This team ensures TEC's investments deliver on strategic goals by managing annual funding and recovery cycles, including in-year adjustments.
Ideally you will have experience in a public sector financial and/or funding role, however we will accept applications from recent graduates.
You'll support complex funding processes with sharp analysis and a solid understanding of finance and government systems. Your work will help allocate, pay, and recover funding across a wide range of education providers — from research and degrees to vocational and foundational learning.
About the Role: He angitūtanga:
- Supporting the team to working with the Ministry of Education and TEC Strategy teams to lift the effectiveness of existing and new funds.
- Collaborate closely with the team to analyse and support funding processes.
- Supporting and/or developing methodologies for negotiating, allocating, and recovering funding.
- Collaborate with the Ministry of Education and TEC teams to enhance existing and new funds.
- Maintain up-to-date finance systems by processing financial transactions based on panel decisions and Fund Owners' guidance.
What are we looking for? He kōrero mōu:
Analyst level
- Knowledge and experience of government funding frameworks and experience in funding analysis is desirable.
- Proven financial analysis skills and the use of financial and analytical tools and systems, this role would ideally suit someone form a financial, commerce, accounting background.
- The ability to communicate audience centric insights from sets of numbers and to consider varied cultures and backgrounds.
- Interpersonal skills to support the coordination of people and work streams across all levels of an organisation.
- A relevant tertiary qualification, in finance, accounting, commerce, or social sciences.
Graduate level
- Strong analytical skills and comfort working with numbers, demonstrated through study or work experience.
- Curious and detail-oriented, with the ability to learn quickly and adapt to new environments.
- Effective communicator, able to write for diverse audiences and consider cultural perspectives.
- Team player with a relevant tertiary qualification in finance, commerce, or social science; corporate experience is desirable but not essential.

Remuneration
Analyst level, the recruitment range for the Analyst level starts from $86k up to $102k, + 3% Kiwisaver contributions
Graduate level, the recruitment range for the Graduate Analyst level starts from $63k up to $74k, + 3% Kiwisaver contributions.
Placement in range is dependent on demonstrable skills and experience.
