Chief Advisor Iwi & Māori Relations

The Māori economy is rapidly evolving, and the Te Amorangi Mātauranga matua, Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), has a critical role in supporting iwi, hapū and Māori communities to thrive through education, training, and skills development.

We're looking for a highly credible and experienced Kaitohutohu Matua Hononga Māori me ngā Iwi to lead strategic engagement, strengthen partnerships, and help shape TEC's approach to working alongside iwi and Māori across Aotearoa. In this senior role, you will work with leaders across TEC to grow our capability in te ao Māori, develop system‑level strategies, and support iwi and Māori organisations to navigate and leverage TEC's products and services for improved outcomes for Māori learners and communities.

He angitūtanga: What will you be doing?

Reporting to the, Tumuaki Tuarua (DCE) Ratonga / Deputy Chief Executive Delivery, the Chief Advisor Iwi & Māori Relations leads TEC's strategic partnerships with iwi, hapū and Māori organisations, ensuring te ao Māori, tikanga and Māori aspirations shape our work and strengthen outcomes.

  • Leading TEC's iwi and Māori partnership approach, building deep, enduring relationships that support long-term educational and economic outcomes for Māori
  • Developing and implementing strategies and frameworks that ensure TEC's products, services, and investments reflect iwi aspirations and te ao Māori perspectives
  • Providing expert cultural, strategic, and relationship advice to senior leaders, supporting TEC to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi in decision-making and system design
  • Mentoring and supporting TEC staff to build their cultural confidence and capability, and to engage effectively and respectfully with iwi, hapū, and Māori organisations.
  • You will represent TEC externally at senior levels and work closely with Māori networks, sector agencies and iwi leaders to advance shared priorities.

 He kōrero mōu: What you will bring to the role

We are seeking a respected Māori leader with deep tikanga and Te Tiriti expertise, strong strategic and relationship capabilities, and the credibility to influence across iwi, government, and the wider tertiary education system.

  • Deep knowledge of te ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including extensive experience working with iwi, hapū, and Māori communities.
  • Proven credibility and strong relationships across Māori networks, government agencies, and the wider public sector.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills, with experience influencing senior leaders, shaping system-level solutions, and navigating complex multi‑stakeholder environments.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-management skills, with the ability to mentor others, guide culturally anchored practice, and build trust in diverse cultural settings.

Remuneration

The recruitment range for this position starts from $152k up to $178k, + Kiwisaver contributions. Placement in range is dependent on demonstrable skills and experience.
